Yes as I take my regular conference tour around the USA in march (taking in the Getting Things Done summit, the SXSW Festival, GDC in San Francisco and the Lonley Planet Blog Awards), it’s time to do the by now traditional “which UMD games will I be taking with me.”

Remember that these games aren’t the best five games ever, they’re my personal choices that I know I will enjoy on a long trip - so there’s a mix of new titles and old favourites in there. And while you might think you know what will be in the UMD case (go on, write them down first and compare), I suspect you’ll be pleasantly surprised by the top choice for this year’s trip.

And because the PSP is one of the best multi-purpose tools out there, I’ll also introduce my Top 5 Film and TV Shows I’ll watch, and the Top Five Games downloaded from the PSN to my Memory Stick.

Secret Agent Clank spins the normal way of Ratchet and Clank games - that would be a set of games I haven’t played before, but will that make a difference to the review of this 3D platformer? After Echochrome last week, it seems I am in the mood for calm zen-like games, so while I take a little bit more time to play with Secret Agent Clank (expect that to be reviewed in the next show) I’ve been chilling with the downloadable title ‘Flow,’ available from your regional Playstation Store. It’s mellow, chilled and can be played in many different styles. Listen to Show #78 to find out why I love this title.

There’s the latest news as well, with news on Wi-Fi access to the Store, Sony’s PSP sales in Japan, and a demo of Pipe Mania in advance of a late September release.

The first thing, as I mentioned in Show #77, is that this is the same physical size and control layout as the PSP Slim and Lite (PSP-2000 model). While I think some will ask for another analouge stick to provide some games with alternative control options, I’m glad that they’ve stayed with the same layout - it means developers have compatibility all the way back to the PSP-1000 and can address some 41 million PSP’s out there.

The addition of the microphone will help the promotion not just of Skype, but in game voice as well - something that I think will come to prominence over the next 18 months or so if the developers make good use of it.

The big change is to the display, with a brighter screen that should update faster. I do wonder what this is going to do to the battery life, with the 3000 still using the same 1200mah battery as the previous version, but I can’t wait to try this out and about. Finally, there’s a tweak to the video out chips, which will allow more TV’s (in more hotels around the world that I visit) to take the TV cable.

PSP-3000 Product Specifications:

In the midst of the Edinburgh Fringe (you can listen here), but even the slow summer months of the PSP (it’s been like this three years in a row now) can be hit by a squall. Sony’s announcement of an updated PSP model due out mid October, the PSP-3000, is going to lead to some raised eyebrows… I think because of what’s not been added.

And Echochrome is just the perfect zen-like game to relax me during the hectic schedule at the Fringe, so that’s up for review in this show as well.

Well spotted, this isn’t Echocrhome (it’s coming, I can see it… now I can’t… now I can… he-heh), but the house here has been on Buzz’s PSP incarnation all weekend, and we’re all fighting to get the 100% perfect score on the solo challenge. So there was no doubt it’s time to swap out the reviews for the newest release. It’s definitly one for trivia heads, and worth a look. Not a news and review show this week, but my thoughts on how Sony and the PSP are faring in 2008. From a strong start to the year with Wipeout Pulse, Patapon and God of War, they’ve kinda let the side down. There’s some good vibes coming from Sony on the second half of the year (there would be, naturally), but I remain to be convinced.

My thinking detailed in more depth in the show, is we need more regularity to the market, over a four week cycle, that goes something like this…

• Week 1: Release a big, flagship game.
• Week 2: Release something cute, around $5, on the Playstation online store
• Week 3: Release a second tier game, that’s quirky and fun, perhaps experimental.
• Week 4: Add a new service to the PSP, either via a firmware update, or a utility app via the store.

Carrying on with the classic titles from last year (and beyond, by the looks of it) is another ‘Arcade Collection,’ this time focussed on a specific genre (the horizontal shooter) and a specific brand - Gradius. Okay, so Syphon Filter: Logan’s Shadow is going to have to wait till the next show. Over the weekend I’ve been taking a long look at both the online Playstation Store (available in a UK and US web browser that looks at http://store.playstation.com/) and the new to PSP title; namely the rhythm based Beats game. Got to say I’m not only impressed, but the vision that Sony are showing here could stand them in good stead during 2008.

Almost a case of the good, the bad and the ugly today; the update to the firmware from 3.6, to 3.7 and shortly to 3.71 leads me to think we’ve never had it so good. Although the disappointment in The Transformers Movie tie-in is going to balance that out very quickly. Such a shame.

Over the summer, the big changes to Sony were announced at the Game Developer Conference from Leipzig, with news on the Go! range, the latest game titles and of course the news on the Sony PSP Slim and Lite. In terms of reviews, as promised it’s Eidos’ Diner Dash; originally a flash based game, does this little puzzle/action game give you enough bite to see you through the gaming day?

Right then, another ‘breaking format’ show (afetr all, why bother having a format if not to break it). There’s a special class of game I wanted to look at, the multiplyaer game you could play ad-hoc, with only one UMD (ie utilising game share to send a client version). A sunny May Day Bank Holiday morning, and there’s only a few clouds in the sky above Scotland’s capital city. Nope that didn’t take long at all. I woke up this morning to the news that the White-Hats have sorted out a downgrader for the PSP Firmware 3.03. So the route for EVERY PSP on the planet is to upgrade to 3.03, and then run the downdgrader to take you back to firmware 1.5 for your homebrew (and then jump forward with the Dark Alex open firmware 3.03 OE-C).

To discuss this little victory (little? lets try a bit more than that) I invited Jake De Tommaso (from PSP Updates) onto the show to discuss why firmware 1.5 is important, how to update your PSP, why Sony are so against the PSP being open (when the PS3 lets you install Linux!) and what lessons the XBox and XNA program could teach Sony.

And here’s the normal service. One big news item this week - the (re)discovery of an exploit that’s open all the way up to firmware 3.03 - so expect a Sony Firmware Update OTA sometime in Feb. It’s just a Hello World at the moment, but it could mean a whole lot more fun. A downgrader is now not a matter of if but when.

I also take a look at the conversion of Bliss Island. Popularised on the web, and then with a PC download version, it makes its handheld debut on the PSP. Can casual web gaming survive on the Sony behemoth? Oh and I also talk about the 2gb ‘official’ memory card I just bought. Does the fact that it is a fake make any difference to me?

New Year, and a new podcast, and straight into the bargain bin in the sales for a review of Go Sudoku. Of course the big news for puzzle fans has been Lumines 2 (and I’m sure a lot of you had a copy of it under your Christmas Tree this year), so it’s time to take a look at that… finally!

So, to answer a few things, expect the next cast to be up by Friday at the latest. I will address one issue, and that’s the length. I’m happy with the short burst format. PGRev may do an hour, and that’s great for them. I’m of the opinion that most of the listeners to this show prefer a short sharp shock of information.

Firmware 2.6 allows you to stream podcasts over the Wi-Fi link to your PSP speakers. Select the podcast from the list presented to you in the RSS Player, wait a few moments to get the network conenction, and then you’ll see teh available shows. Select one with the ‘X’ key, and away you go.

Go for firmware 2.7 and you can also save the podcasts to your Memory Stick so you can listen to them offline. Find the show you want to save in the same way as if you are going to stream it. Now call up the properties ‘triangle’ and you’ll see the save option. This will download the ‘cast, and place it into a folder in the music player. It’s also better on your battery life to save a podcast and then play it from the stick rather than streaming live.

With official demos of Lemmings, Burnout Legends, Archer Macleans Mercury, Medievil Resurrection, TOCA RaceDriver 2, Virtua Tennis and Wipeout Pure in my PSP-belt, I ask if it isn’t time Sony put them all to work as soon as possible?

Loco Roco is pretty visual, so most of you will already have the controls and aims worked out, but it’s nice to be sure. It’s the same playable level, so there’s no need to keep both on your Memory Stick.

Thankfully the ‘crazy’ japanese musical soundtrack is there (yaah!) but I want to know… where’s the Klingon language version?

1. Upgrade to firmware 2.71 through the “Network Update” option in the menu system. There are currently differing accounts on if you need to update from 2.7 to 2.71. Firmwares 2.6 and earlier will definitly need to update.
2. Download the Kazuo file from Sony Playstation Japan.
3. Hook your PSP up over USB, and get to the root directory of the PSP in your favorite file manager (likely Windows Explorer or the Mac Desktop).
4. Go into the PSP folder, and then the Game folder. Create a new folder and call it UCJS10036. Copy the downloaded Kazuo file (which will be called eboot.pbp) into this folder.
5. Unplug the USB cable.
6. In the menu system, under the Game icon, scroll down to the very last icon (Memory Stick). Select this and you’ll see the Kazuo Demo waiting for you to open.
