The PSP Show Slowly Recovering

As you may have noticed, The PSP Show, along with a number of shows at The Podcast Network, has been suffering with some DDoS and other attacks on our server. We’ve got El PSP bootstrapped up for the moment, and we’ll be getting the God of War show out as soon as possible.

PSP Firmware v2.71 Released

Sony have globally released the 2.71 firmware for the PSP. All regions shuold have availability under the Network Update option on their PSP. So what’s new and changed?

You can now download demos through the PSP Web Browser (previously you had to install demo files over a USB connection).
Bugfix update to the Location Free Player, allowing the correct image to display when video output is selected..
The icon “Goto Network Service” has been added into the “Network” column.

There’s not a lot updated here, so the main thing is the UI addition to make downloading demos easier. I can only assume that’s in response to the feedback from the LocoRoco demo that was made available. Nice to see that Sony should be continuing this trend (yes I know about Kazuo, see the next post), and it’s obviously another step that needs to be field tested before the PSOne emulation is made available.

And it should also be obvious that as 2.7 broke homebrew capability, so does 2.71. I wonder though if there’s a check for the Undiluted Platinum modchip in this mix?

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories Announced

Good news from Rockstar Games, at least for GTA fans… Vice City Stories is coming to the PSP. It’s due for a North American release in October, and promises to be another ‘new’ GTA title. So basically the same mould as Liberty City Stories then, but geographically challenged? Certainly permalink challenged. With a flash based website I can’t link directly to the press release.

The Sony PSP E3 2006 Titles

E3, the big consumer electronics show in May, naturally has a large Sony presence, and the PSP will be there, with eight titles onthe Sony display (other companies, such as EA, will have the PSP on their stands as well). Which games has Sony decided to use to represent the PSP?

ATV Offroad Fury Pro
Gangs of London
Killzone: Liberation
Lemmings
Loco Roco
NBA ‘07
Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters
SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Fireteam Bravo 2
World Tour Soccer ‘06

A nice mix, captuing the power of the PSP (SOCOM 2 and Gangs of London especially), and the inclusion of Loco Roco should throw more light on the electronic distribution systems for demos (and potential titles over the air?) that Sony may be using in 2006 and beyond.

The New Home (Noobz) For You Homebrew Fans

Coders Ditlew and Fanjita have moved their efforts at keeping the PSP platform as open to homebrew coders as possible from the old Fanjita website to Noobz.eu. In their words:

For a long time we’ve been a bit uncomfortable with the fact that the official home for eLoader was fanjita.org, even though it was a joint project between Ditlew and Fanjita. Finally we came up with a team name that we think fits us perfectly, and so the new domain, Noobz.eu, is born. Noobz.eu will be the official home of eLoader, and all our joint projects, from now on. The old fanjita.org links will continue to work for a while, but will eventually be withdrawn.

Lumines Sequel Due This Autumn

Say goodbye to your free time by the looks of it, with Buena Vista publishing Q Entertainment’s Luminies II for the PSP (see press release). And if that wasn’t enough, Luminies Plus - a conversion of the original puzzler - will debut for the PS2 console, following the path soon to be opened up by the GTA:LCS port. The interesting number in the press release though is the units of Lumines sold (700,000). Given that Lumines is probably in the top sellers on the PSP, it’s a good indication of where the market is for a good UMD Game.

PSP Firmware v2.7 Released

Update: The PSP Show’s UK PSP is picking up the firmware update via the Network Update option.

Japanese PSP users can get the firmware update for their PSP to take it to 2.7 as of today. The official Sony word is that US and UK/Europe PSP owners will get the update ‘in due course ‘So what are the highlights?

Macromedia Flash support in the web browser (Flash Player 6).
More AAC support for audio playback.
Ability to save podcasts to your memory stick.
Memory Stick code changes to increase support sticks with more than 2gb free.

Naturally I’m over the moon to see the ability to download podcasts for offline listening (should save battery life as well just taking two minutes of Wifi to get a cast, rather than 60 minutes of Wifi streaming) and once 2.7 makes it to my UK PSP I’ll let you all know how it works.

It should also come as no surprise that Sony has closed down the Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories exploit that allowed a patched savegame exploit to run homebrew code - balancing this with the addition of the Flash Player will be seen as derisory by the homebrew fanatics (who are still treasuring their v1.5 players) but the majority of people willl love it.

All in all, it’s got the basics we were expecting, and the big jump to v3.0 will probably be for the PSX emulation previously annouced. For now, Sony are still improving their portable console, and I for one am both amazed at this, and delighted the process is continuing to happen.
