The PSP Show #4 - Thoughts on Firmware 2.7
The PSP Show #4 - Thoughts on Firmware 2.7 (MP3 8.6 mb 12 minutes 32 seconds)
LISTEN HERE
Given the firmware news today is “a pretty big thing,” there’s no way that any sensible podcast reporting would wait until next Monday to talk about it. So here’s The PSP Show #04, six days early, to talk about 2.7…
- The new features in firmware 2.7.
- Saving podcasts to your Memory Stick.
- The loss of homebrew exploits and what this means to the big picture.
- The cynical view on why this update has happened now.
- The Loco Roco Demo - Sony’s new marketing angle and how it worked for Nokia’s N-Gage (also on QJ.net in English).

Hey man,
just wanted to tell you that I really enjoy your show, and that I think you should keep up with the good. I for one, have no problem with your accent (but maybe that’s because my grandparents are english). Concerning the whole firmare issue, I think that you have some pretty good points, and I really do think that the LOCO ROCO demo is that start of a trend by Sony. If you check out the american PSP website, there is a content pack that they release at the beginning of each month, but since it has started, it’s been quite lacking. I really do believe that Sony is going to give an english version of the demo for the May pack.
Well, I gotta go, but I’ll repeat that I enjoy your show, and you should keep this up. Thanks!

Ok I was listening to the PSP show #4 and the guy was talking about paying $500 for a homebrew certificate for your PSP and your PSP only. I could maybe see the homebrew certificate sometime in the future but it would cost no where near $500 dollars. See, The PSP alone to build it would cost around maybe $500-$700 but thats only if your buying 1 of every part. but Sony can afford to buy in bulk thus lowering the price per unit. it wouldnt cost much more than $100 per certificat tops.

So this was the first episode of your show that I listened to… rather interesting I must say.
I’m a bit confused, you say it costs significantly more than $150 to produce a single PSP? Yes it costs millions to develop and Sony makes their money back through licensing, but I can’t see it being feasible for them to produce, if it in fact costs more than $150 to produce each unit.
SNES on PSP is just plain fun! And it’s not practical / convenient / fun to carry around a small laptop (that was a silly suggestion, no offense). I agree the GP2X is a better solution if playing ports of your favorite emulator or open source game is your thing.
I have no idea if there could be a nice happy medium met between Sony and people who love home brew and obviously they have no interest in trying. But I must say, I have written code for the PSP and it is rather fun! MORE fun than playing a port of some PS2 game on the PSP (GTA, SOCOM, Burnout).
I must say paying for a certificate in order to play home brew isn’t that bad of an idea. I’m not sure what an acceptable price would be, but having an official SDK (Software Development Kit) complete with documentation would probably increase the quality of home brew applications significantly. I think that would make whatever the cost of owning a certificate seem more justified.

I for 1 have to say your accent was so confusing, and was so hard to understand what you were saying, it took me about a minute to figure out what you were talking about when you said “snez” I was like… must be some brit slang, but then it hit me it you were talking about the SNES. Now about the update, theres really nothing worth while in this update, besides being able to play the latest games, I have a 2.6 PSP, upgraded just to play DBZ, then got GTA for the homebrew goodness…. and yes, the homebrew is worth it. Its not all Emu’s, there are PDA-like applications, calculators, and various other goodies that do things better than what Sony is putting out so far. Thats the true gist of homebrew to me.

Hi ewen. I love your show 4 one
Hey man, i have a real problem that i was wondering if you could look into for me man. I live in Australia, and recently had downloaded the new firmware for the system. Cool, all was going well, until alas, my PSP crashes, and so called “BRICKS” itself, unable to turn back on. I rang the helpline here in AUS and because my PSP isnt the AUS version, it is the white PSP-1006, they couldnt offer me any help, and when i mean any, i mean they disconnected my call before even explaining why they couldn’t help. I was furious, i paid top dollar for this PSP, and i love it. I then emailed PSP in japan, and they said to me that they wont fix it, because im australian, and that the psp wasn’t deemed to be played in aus, trying to tell me that the region coding for it wouldnt play AUS UMD’s, but i have never had one problem playing them yet, and i have about 10 umd titles. The japanese sony department also suggested that i find someone in japan that could do the dealings for me, but how the hell am i supposed to do that when i am on the other side of the world. I then rang someone who said they repair PSP’s and they couldnt help either. Im in a real hole, i love my PSP, and all i want is for someone to tell me how much it will cost to get it fixed :S Well if you could offer me any help, it would be really appreciated, keep up the brilliant show
i hope i can listen from my rss soon !!!! cheers, andrew g

Just listened to ep. 4 of the podcast.
Some good points raised there. Most of what I’ve tried homebrew-wise (I’m on firmware v2 currently) has been good - but, IHMO, not good enough to merit sticking with v2 when there’s these extra features (features I might make use of) on v2.7. I know that eventually someone will find an exploit anyway, and thus I’m not all that bothered. So, as soon as my battery recharges, I’m upgrading.
IMHO it’s true that the GP2X is a better platform for homebrew, too - it’s been around longer, they’ve done more with it, and it’s not something that requires exploits or workarounds, it does it easily with no hassle - so all this whining that v2.7 ‘ruins the PSP’ is rubbish (having read the QJ.net LocoRoco article with the ‘upgrade for this? f**k off Sony’ comments).
Keep up the good work with the podcast, anyway - no problems with the accent for me (heck, it’s not even very strong).
